Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk To Take part in “Cairo literature festival"

Turkish Nobel Laureate “Orhan Pamuk" is to take part in the opening of the first session of the “Cairo Literature Festival” to be held between Feb. 13 and 20 under the slogan "Blending of Cultures and Communication Across Generations", under the media sponsorship of the literary magazine "Akhbar Al Adab".

The "Cairo Literature Festival” aims at promoting communication among the literary public on the one side and writers and critics on the other. It also aims to strengthen communication ties among different generations of Egyptian and Arab writers, as well as to promote cultural exchange between Arabic literature and the Literature of other countries through inviting a number of writers from around the world and translating samples of their works into Arabic and reading them in their original languages and then in Arabic to the public.

The Festival is to be held in several locations in Fatimid and Khedivial Cairo including some cultural venues such as "Bayt Al-Suhaymi", and "Bayt Al-Sinnari" and traditional coffee shops such as “Zahret Al-Bustan”.

“Sefsafa is taking a big part in the preparation of the Festival but the Organizing Committee includes also many volunteers from writers, poets, and journalists with extensive knowledge of Arabic literature as well as world literature and organizers of cultural events”, said Mohamed El-Baaly Director of "Sefsafa Culture and Publishing”.

Organizers of the festival have invited writers from 10 countries including Turkish Nobel Laureate "Orhan Pamuk", and writers from several countries including Germany (Christoph Peters), Spain and Ireland (Michael O'Connell), Estonia (Kätlin Kaldmaa), Slovakia (Monica kompanikova), Czech Republic (Petra Hulova), Poland (Stanislaw Strasburger, Andrizej Muszynski), and Hungary (Dennis krossovki).

Organizers of the festival will insure the translation of literary texts of invited writers into Arabic to read during the Festival, so that each writer reads his text in his own language then the text is to be read again in Arabic to ensure the public's interaction with the text and its author.

The Advisory Committee includes prominent names including Writer Ibrahim Abdel Meguid, Writer Hamdy El Gazzar, Prominent Translator “Humphrey T. Davies", Mehmet Demirtas (President of the Istanbul Literature Festival), Michael Marsh (President of The Prague Writers’ Festival), and Tarek Al-Taher, Editor-in-Chief of the literary magazine "Akhbar Al Adab".

The Organizing Committee of the project has coordinated with a number of foreign cultural institutions such as Goethe Institute so that each institution supports the participation of one or more writers of its nationality in the Festival through covering the costs of his/her stay in Egypt during the period of his/her participation in the Festival, in whole or in part.

This has required additional coordination efforts from the organizers, but in return it can be assured that the organizers had not received any direct financial support from any foreign entity.
