About the festival

CairoLiterature Festival aims to promote communication between the consumers of literature on one hand and the writers and critics on the other. It aims also to strengthen links between different generations of Egyptian and Arab writers.

Furthermore, it will sustain cultural exchange between Arab literature and that of other regions by inviting writers from all over the world and translating parts of their works into Arabic in order to read them in their mother tongue and in Arabic in front of the audience.

In order to achieve the main objective of the festival; which is promoting communication between writers and their readers, some cafes in Cairo will be chosen and equipped for holding literary readings that facilitate interaction with the attendants.

The festival will be organized in the following locations in Cairo:

1-    Fatimid Cairo; particularly El-Moez Street and some of its cultural spaces such as Beit El Sehemy or tourist locations as El Wekala.

2-    KhedivialCairo, currently known as Cairo downtown. This area has several locations that are suitable for holding cultural events including cafes historically known as meeting places for intellectuals like Zahret El-Bostan and Reesh, as well as national and foreign cultural centers such as Goethe Institut and El-Balad Cultural Center.

3-    Untraditional spaces near to Cairo downtown such as Beit El-Sennary and the Palace of the Prince Taz in El-Sayeda Zeinab quarter, House of Poetry (Beit El-Set Wasila) in Al-Azhar and El-Masrabeya Cultural Center in El-Moqattam.

A group of popular Egyptian writers, such as Ibrahim Abdelmaguid and Ahmed Murad, will be asked to participate in the festival along with several distinguished writers from different generations in order to read texts and interact with the audience in mutual meetings with Arab and international writers.

Arab writers from Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Saudi Arabia, will be invited to participate in the festival along with well-known Egyptian writers in order to facilitate communication between them and the Egyptian audience.

The festival organizers will also invite writers from beyond the Arab region, and there is already a tentative agreement with writers from Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Ireland, Lithuania, Slovenia, Slovakia and Puerto Rico. The organizers will work on having texts of the invited writers translated into Arabic to be read in the activities of the festival; so that every writer can read the text in its original form and then the same text is read again in Arabic to make it possible for the audience to interact with.

There are also tentative agreements with several means of media (a TV channel, a newspaper and a website) to be the media sponsors of the festival in order to have a distinguished and sufficient media coverage of the festival.
